As many of you may be aware the political situation in Nepal has been rather nerve-wracking of late. Those of us living in the Kingdom have experienced the full range of emotions from fear to hope during the movement that finally restored a semblance of democracy and stability to the country. While we have continued to produce the finest hand-made Nepali silver jewelry available anywhere, it has been a struggle.
The civil war that has been traumatizing the land for the past 10 years has now hopefully come to an end. The leftist forces are in the process of joining an interim government and this could well lead to the fulfillment of the wish of every Nepali for peace.
Nepal managed to escape the catharsis of colonization, unlike so many other countries of Asia, through its utter isolation. This isolation was also crucial to preserving the ancient techniques of the traditional silversmith that have been so much a part of Nepal’s culture.
The wars that affected so many lands passed Nepal by, allowing the people to follow their traditional ways of life quite undisturbed. Typically out of beat with the rest of the world, this country eventually got caught up in an ideological struggle pitting Communists against traditional forces, long after communism had vanished from the world stage.
While this conflict has raged we have managed to keep 100’s of jewelers working creating masterpieces of hand-crafted sterling silver and we now all fervently hope this tragic stage in Nepal’s long history is behind us now. The good people of the Himalayas deserve better from their leaders and perhaps will now have the long awaited opportunity to live again in peace.
